Hump Day Workouts

What is Burpees & Burgers, why do we do it and how does it work?

These are the questions we’ve been getting lately, so I’d like to see if I can get it all out there for everyone who is a little unsure.

B&Bs is in it’s 3rd year, it is a charity event that supports JDRF – Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, an organization that is dedicated to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes, also referred to as T1D. T1D is unlike type 2 diabetes and is more likely an auto-immune disease. Children and adults who live with T1D take insulin injections regularly and/or utilize an external insulin pump that mimics a pancreas as best it can. Currently there is only treatment for T1D but not a cure.

B&Bs allows Urban Athlete to raise both funds and awareness for T1D. Participants choose to get pledges per burpee completed or flat donations, the time limit is 5 minutes to complete as many burpees as possible. We typically have about 35 people complete burpees each year. We also raise money through raffle items, raffle tickets can be purchased now through the event on Friday, July 26th.

This year’s raffle items include:
-3 Phillies vs Cubs Lower Lever Tickets, August 7th (donated by Elfant Wissahickon)
-$100 gift certifcate to Avenida
-90 minute Massage with Jacqui
-2 seats at the August 13th wine dinner at Wine Thief
-$50 gift certificate, growler & fill and t-shirt from Earth, Bread + Brewery
-4 workout sessions with Pamela, where you’ll workout with her (a different spin from year’s past)

During the event we have food, drinks and fun time. Food sponsors donate food, yes including burgers. Several vendors will be onsite to be able to purchase athletic clothing and jewelry accessories. Participants will receive t-shirts with the event name on them.

It’s a really important event that directs a lot of attention to the lesser known type of diabetes. Our fundraising efforts are attached directly to our Run/Walk team for the October 5k at the Art Museum stairs.

Our gracious sponsors currently include:
Admark 360
Elfant Wissahickon
